Lymphatic Drainage Massage
What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage (LDM)?
Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a specialized massage technique involving light pressure and "skin stretching" in certain directions and in rhythmic sequences designed to better lymph fluid circulation and unclog blockages.
This gentle pumping flushes the entire lymphatic system, left side to right side, starting with the primary organ of the lymphatic system, the thymus. LDM stimulates the lymph nodes and drains lymphatic fluids.
LDM is not painful when done correctly. In fact, it is so gentle that many people fall asleep during their sessions.
What are the major benefits of LDM?
Why is Lymphatic Drainage Massage recommended after aesthetic surgery, including tummy tuck and Brazilian buttlift?
During surgery, lymphatic fluids build up and can pool, resulting in swelling. Most doctors advise that, without LDM, there is a risk that the swelling and inflammation could turn into fibrosis, which is a permanent hardening of the area. It is normal for some patients to experience lumpiness and hardness in areas affected by liposuction and other invasive tools. These adhesions can be broken up in a Lymphatic Drainage Massage. LDM also helps relieve bruising. LDM ensures that patients achieve the best results possible from surgery.
How often is LDM prescribed?
Viridian believes that healthy adults should get at least 1 full Lymphatic Drainage Massage annually and more often when experiencing bloating or edemas, fatigue or insomnia, acne, allergies, or sinus congestion. After surgery, patients are generally prescribed at least 10-15 Lymphatic Drainage Massages to achieve optimal post surgery results. Every patient is different, however, most doctors advise their patients begin LDM treatment 24 hours after surgery to obtain the best, and fastest results. Our 30 minute spot treatment is great if you've had a full drain within the year and need a particular region flushed. Common areas of focus include ear/nose/throat, post surgical abdomen and back, post immunization arms and armpits.
Our hour long lymphatic drainage massage address the entire lymphatic system.
The Viridian 90 minute lymphatic drainage addresses the entire lymphatic system and provides time to focus on cleansing and flushing particular areas of stagnation as well.
What to Expect During Your LDM
There is some confusion about what an LDM is. It is not painful. Clients are undressed and fully draped on the massage table. We use different propping and positioning to ensure client comfort. Your therapist will flush your entire lymphatic system. While each session is focused on specific clients needs, Viridian believes that regardless of your goals, usually the entire system needs to be addressed to receive the full benefits of LDM.
Expect a gentle massage. The majority of your lymphatic vessels run in conjunction with your veins and you can expect us to be working those areas. Some clients have never had bodywork in certain areas that are addressed in LDM, like the belly or the axillaries (armpits). Viridian does not include breasts in our LDM but for clients who are interested, we're always happy to teach your more about your lymphatic system and how to work on yourself at home.
What to Expect After Your LDM
For a day or two after LDM, some clients experience a surge in energy while others require lots of rest. Some people feel like they're getting sick. To encourage your system to keep flushing, drink lots of water and get 15-30 minutes of rigorous movement, taking into account your personal circumstances. It's also important to sweat. Avoid antiperspirants, get in a sauna, steam room, or hot bath, to encourage your body's optimal detoxification. Some clients notice an increase in toilet time. For others, lymphatic fluid finds its way out of the body through tears or more saliva than usual.
Every body is different and responds uniquely. Regardless, it is most important that you do not judge your body or decide anything for the first 24-48 hours after an LDM. If anything, celebrate your lymphatic system for its role in your healthy immune system and its ability to flush toxins out of your body.
While Viridian DOES NOT remove or drain surgical tubes, we can provide LDM while they are still attached.
